Logo Animation: Spark + Boom

Posted by | June 1, 2012 at 8:14 pm

I recently got asked to do a logo animation for Spark + Boom and I wanted to quickly go over the process of how it was created from start to finish.

First, I was given the logo that I would be animating. Here is the original logo:

Spark + Boom Original Logo

Looking at the logo, I thought it looked like paint or a pen marker, but it wouldn’t go with the name if I just made some kind of paint animation. I needed to infuse the “Spark” and the “Boom” somewhere.

After a lot of thinking and playing around with the logo, I had an idea to animate the lines to form the logo, as if it were being drawn on, but having the lines be a fuse. As the lines animate, a “spark” burns away on it until it merges to form the logo. When the spark dies, it blows up the logo as if it were a bomb, and thus the “boom” is revealed.

I ended up creating the fuse in 3D, which I would then merge into a 2D animation:

From there, I took the 3D render and composited it together with the 2D animation, adding a spark, some camera movements, and a little motion blur. It started to look pretty good, but it still needed the boom. I created the “boom” in After Effects, using the Shatter Effect. As the logo explodes, I added some volumetric lighting, jagged camera movements, lens blur, and more motion blur. Then the final reveal of the company name is shown, which then slowly fades out to conclude the animation.
